Recently, Ston swiss took to his Facebook page a video of him addressing the public about their denial and refusal to break the chains surrounding our music industry and as such not helping it cross the boundaries. Let me make a point clear, there are two major I mean major African musical genres that laid the foundation of African Music and that’s Makossa(Cameroon) & Rumba (Congo). All other genres take their base from these 2 main genres (you can find out for yourself to confirm) just enough to let you know that Cameroon has been up to something big but along the line has let it slide pass its fingers.
We have what it takes but don’t know how to sell it that’s our major problem. Nigerians for the moment are the top guns when exporting music internationally is concerned and that’s because they know how to sell their music and for a clue, (most of the music Nigerians sold and are selling out comes from “highlife” a musical culture wave from Ghana) so know there was a time when Nigerians had only their film industry and they consumed mostly foreign music but the cards have been turned around so quickly because they understood what it takes.
However, Cameroonians are talented but are missing in something major and that’s the digital era. Jumia recently left Cameroon due to the slow nature their transactions were been carried out here despite the number of black Friday give aways, Cameroonians still couldn’t match up so they had to leave saying Cameroon isn’t ready for the digital world. What I’m trying to point out is, how many major blogs exist in Nigeria with over a million followers (their population aside look into their hard work and what they export I don’t think a blog can be followed unless it has interesting facts that pushes fans to follow up). There are enough blogs existing in Nigeria enough to sell out their artist in every type of way now come back to Cameroon and ask yourself, how many major blogs with over a million followers on Facebook (forget about the language barrier and interesting blog gets fans all over not only within the country and we have an advantage of being bilingual so it’s a blessing though most see it as a curse) we have maybe only Jewanda Magazine and Culture Ebene with a huge follow up though they don’t measure up to a million and yet they blog more about foreign artists than our artists(go check for yourselves that’s a pure fact I follow them up). How then can aim at conquering a market with a product but refuse to market the product it is the major question, how do you want people to buy then? Mc Charlene on an interview at Hip Tv in Nigeria brought this point up about Nigerians not playing our music and the comments were typical of Nigerians… some said “How can we play their songs when they can’t get out of their comfort zone”
Well, it takes time to build a mansion so we at its foundation phase that’s certain because we once had it now we trying to take what we once had and that’s a difficult task to pull through why because the public has become dormant to our music and active to Nigerian music. They sell better that’s why we buy and have to pay Burna boy a whooping 177 million FCFA and unable to give a Cameroonian artist 5 million (you wondering right?).
So upcoming artist Ston swiss brought this video up and I had to check him out his songs and more. Trust me this guy is amazing and from today onwards I will personally try by all efforts to push and promote his music in ways I can, can’t always wait for people to react without acting so it’s better to start the change then later ask them to follow up so I will personally promote his music.
Talking about his music with some friends however, they said his sound is more Nigerian than Cameroon and I had one question to ask them.
If you have a restaurant and you sell Eru and your neighbor sells Achu close by and he has more customers and every one comes asking for Achu rather than Eru and they leave your restaurant most often because they wanted Achu rather and your neighbor keeps getting the customers now for you to sort out this problem and sell more too what will you do??
Simple, learn and start selling Achu and to keep your old customers, keep cooking the Eru I guess now you get into competition with your neighbor right?? So if he sounds more Nigerian, good and fine let him try the market because that’s what is selling more right now(Achu) but let him not forget to do some Cameroon spice too (Eru) to get deep into competition. I hope now you get my point, Afro beat has taken over so it’s better to use that and pave the way then when you big enough, you bring in the Cameroonian vibe and that time people will buy.
He said something very interesting about Stanley Enow and Jovi that makes more sense than you can imagine. He said “WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE THE INFLUENCE WHEN YOU CAN’T USE IT TO BUILD OUR CULTURE” I know Mboko gang will surely sit tight now to read on but to be sincere, Jovi isn’t helping the industry let me point out some facts;
He rarely collaborates with artists out of his label
He rarely gives credit to young artists (check out what Sarkodie is doing in Ghana you will be amazed)
He rarely collaborates with other producers or talent wise individuals like him yes you produce your songs so someone else can’t produce your song even if it’s just once, the person must be from NEWBELL RECORDS??
(remembered reading an article of how Davido flew in Lyta from Nigeria to Ghana just so they could record Monalisa remix and he paid for the video which the young guy could not afford and excuse me Lyta isn’t signed to DMW even till now…Olamide dropped on Bella Shmurda’s Vision 2020 and the guy had never had a million view in all his previous releases but Olamide dropped on a song from him and bam! Bella Shmurda is now a name in Nigeria but Bella isn’t signed to YBNL) ……. You see what im trying to say, we grow by lifting others.
Stanley on the other hand is more of a business man though but I believe at this point if Stanley can pick up a young blood and show to the public and they grow together but I guess that can’t work out cause even the artist he recently signed was rarely shown publicly even his music and he later quitted the label because of poor management or better still every one’s priority in the label was Stanley ……
Well, to cut the long story short, Ston swiss on the interview path says;
Jovi has the talent to produce and Stanley Has the talent of selling and if brought together can work wonders in this country music wise (imagine Jovis hands on a track and Stanleys hands on the promotion, that will be massive) however let’s support our music not our own cuz that “support your own” has been a major scam in this our tortoise crawling industry.
I just want you guys to know and check out Ston swiss cause this guy is amazing and with the right push, he can bring forth a new energy into this game….
